Abandoned because of his disability but now given a new life by Friends from Germany

In most Ugandan cultures, a mother giving birth to disabled children is seen as a curse or bad omen in the family or society and most men divorce their wives and abandon the children with disabilities with their mothers and take the normal able children with them. So many children in Uganda are falling in the category of the above.
Andrew’s story
Our case study today is Andrew 14 years born physically and mentally disabled living in Kyebando Wakiso district who was abandoned after birth by his mother after knowing about his disabilities. The father took him over as a baby with the help of neighbors and raised him in a very difficult condition.  The father got tired and also abandoned him in the house, as a single young father he felt Andrew was a blockade to his future marriages and up to the age of 14 years Andrew was helped by whoever cares.

During Power Minds Youth Project implementations in the field, Andrew was discovered by our project manager Mr. Buwembo Yeko who is equally physically disabled. He advocated for Andrews help using Power Minds Youth platform. And luck came when our Executive Director, Mr. Nicholas Ssenjala approved for Andrew’s help and advocacy among PMYO disability on going programs.

This was brought to the notice of our volunteer from Germany, Mr. Timo Julian Fischer who came and visited Andrew to ascertain his status. In return he talked to his father Mr. Micheal Fischer in Germany and in just 5 minutes Micheal Fischer had mobilized a modern Wheelchair made in Germany through his friend Mr. KERN . He embarked on delivering the Wheelchair via DHL courier services with all expenses paid. This helped cover the first problem Andrew had of Immobility.

Luck came again when Mr. Micheal Fischer pledged a full 1 year physiotherapy, nutrition, Clinical treatment and full rehabilitation for Andrew in order to regain his meaningful life in the community.
Mr. Fischer believes that Disability is not the end of life neither is it a curse, we are all humans who deserve a life in the world.

PMYO would like to extend its great appreciation to Mr. Micheal Fischer and family, Mr. Kern and all friends of our friends who have followed Andrews situation. Please continue following Andrew and pledge for his rehabilitation and we believe Andrew is going to regain his meaningful life in his community and he will be an advocate in the future for other children like him.
PMYO will continue helping children and Youth with disabilities regain life. Currently we are building modern Sanitary facilities for children with disabilities in schools and communities funded by People Help People One World Idstein Germany. This will help these children have better Sanitation and Hygiene.
